Wizards of the Coast Announces Official D&D Mobile App
Publisher Wizards of the Coast has announced that it is creating a set of digital tools and mobile apps called "Dungeon & Dragons: Beyond." The digital toolset will be made in partnership with Curse and is set to have a beta-testing release this summer.
The announcement for the digital companion to the popular pen-and-paper role-playing game was made at the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) East 2017 in Boston, as covered by Polygon. The publisher's PAX East press release is also made available on the "Dungeons & Dragons" official website and contains a few details on the new set of digital tools.
Looking at the press statement, the mobile app is supposed to work on a range of mobile devices, while the game rule set that the system will use is specifically tuned for the "Dungeons & Dragons" Fifth Edition. Among other things, the app will have a rules compendium, character builder and digital character sheets.
According to Nathan Stewart, senior director of "Dungeons & Dragons," the tools are meant to supplement the traditional tabletop gameplay. "D&D Beyond speaks to the way gamers are able to blend digital tools with the fun of storytelling around the table with your friends," said Nathan Stewart, talking about the new ways players can enjoy the game with digital tools. "These tools represent a way forward for D&D, and we're excited to get them into the hands of players soon!" the senior director added.
Wizards of the Coast, the publisher behind "Dungeons & Dragons," will team up with Curse, a multimedia firm that builds digital-gaming management tools for various platforms. Curse has been acquired by Twitch, and this new development aims to bring the classic tabletop game further into the digital space, according to The Verge.
