'Wolfenstein II' Gameplay News: Developer Explains Why Game Did Not Launch With Multiplayer Mode
A few days before "Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus" was officially released, developer Machine Games explained why they chose not to launch the game with a multiplayer mode.
When "Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus" was announced, the story that the game took on showed an emphasis in building alliances by its main protagonist BJ Blazkowicz.
However, Machine Games' narrative designer Tommy Tordsson Björk told GamesIndustry.biz that the absence of a multiplayer mode was their way of preserving the "progressive stories" that the game has.
The same report added that focusing on "The New Colossus'" single-player mode was part of Machine Games' plan to keep on providing "more interesting, immersive" stories.
Tordsson Björk further explained: "The only way we can create these super immersive narrative experiences is if we can solely focus on the single-player." He added: "Having a multiplayer component in this work process would just dilute it all. That's the danger if you try to do two things at once.
Notably, this has been the strategy Machine Games has taken since the "Wolfenstein" franchise was handled by Bethesda Softworks.
Meanwhile, Tordsson Björk also addressed what many people speculated on - that "The New Colossus'" story was somewhat an attempt to tackle the current political climate, especially in the United States.
However, the narrative designer clarified that the game's plot -- where the Nazi forces have completely taken over America -- was a story that they have been developing since 2014.
"We couldn't possibly know what was going to happen by 2017. What we want to do when we write the story is to make something more timeless, and not a specific commentary on our time," Tordsson Björk added.
In the beginning of "The New Colossus," Blazkowicz wakes up several months from successfully bombing the Nazi U-Boat in the end of "The New Order." While still recovering from heavy wounds and internal organ damages, an earlier released gameplay walkthrough showed Blazkowicz dealing with Nazi soldiers as soon as his eyes opened while in a secret medical facility run by the Resistance's allied doctor, Seth.
"Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus" was released on Friday, Oct. 27, for the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. A Nintendo Switch port will arrive next year.
