'Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap' Release Date News: Remake To Be Released This April

DotEmu is bringing back a 1989 classic action-adventure video game. The French developer has recently announced that a remake of "Wonder Boy III" is heading to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch this April.

According to Gematsu, players interested in purchasing "Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap" can get their digital copies on April 18. The PC version will arrive via Steam several weeks after.

"Wonder Boy III" was originally developed by Westone as part of Sega's 'Wonder Boy' series. It was released in 1989 and enjoyed quite a huge following. Although not as popular as other 2D games like "Mario Brothers," the platforming video game was well-loved by many fans. It follows the life of an adventurer who can transform into a variety of animals.

The remake is currently being developed by Lizardcube. According to the description provided, players can use their old Sega Master System passcode and continue their old saves and progression from the 1989 game. The protagonist still possesses the unique ability to transform into an animal of his choice, whether is a lizard, mouse, piranha, lion or a hawk.

In a previous interview with Venture Beat, DotEmu chief executive officer Cyrille Imbert explained their reason for resurrecting not only "Wonder Boy III," but other games as well. According to him, it was not about money. It was more of giving people the chance to rediscover their enjoyment in playing the classics.

"Since the beginning, we've specialized in bringing back awesome licenses from the past — the '80s, '90s, and early 2000s. That's how we got these licenses. We've also worked on games like Double Dragon, Another World — we worked a lot with SNK in the past, which is why we're doing Windjammers," Imbert said.

"Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap" will be released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch on April 18.
