The head of the World Evangelical Alliance (WEA), the worlds largest fellowship of evangelical denominations, churches and organizations, released a nine-point prayer suggestion for the faithful, Friday, Dec. 31, 2004.
Rev. Gary Edmonds, general secretary of the WEA, explained that there are two things Christians can do to immediately assist the survivors of the massive tsunami disaster in Asia: prayer and financial offerings.
In regards to prayer, Edmonds listed nine topics of concern as the full extent of disaster unfolds.
Pray specifically for: the strength of the workers and personnel who are searching for, identifying and burying the dead; the timely arrival of adequate water, food and medicine; those who are grieving and have lost loved ones; the pastors and Christian leaders who are asked to provide counsel, spiritual comfort and hope; the mobilization of resources to the needed locations; the clean up and reconstruction process that will likely take years; the compassion and splendor of God to be revealed in the midst of such devastation; the coordination of the relief efforts; protection from profiteering by those who will use tragedy for corrupt ends, he wrote.
In regards to financial contributions, Edmonds said Christians should give generously, but through appropriate channels.
Three organizations listed by Edmonds were World Relief, World Concern and Action International.
He added, however, that there are many good organizations you can give to and this list is by no means inclusive.
