'World of Final Fantasy' Sequel Release Date: Series Coming to iOS and Android

"World of Final Fantasy" is getting a sequel this year.

The latest issue of Japanese magazine Weekly Famitsu obtained by Gematsu reveals that the follow-up will be titled "World of Final Fantasy: Meli-Melo."

It will be released on the iOS and Android in Japan in 2017, but there is no word yet when it will find its way to the United States. If the release pattern is anything like the original, there won't be a long wait because North America actually got the first game a day before it was released in Japan.

Apart from the fact that it is releasing in the mobile devices, "World of Final Fantasy: Meli-Melo" will be very different than its predecessor in the sense that it is more casual-themed although the same characters will be included and co-op play is still supported.

The sequel will feature a "Garden Dome" where players can befriend Mirages and go on an adventure in the other world of Valgallan. The story will be told in manga form.

"World of Final Fantasy" executive producer Shinji Hashimoto and director Hiroki Chiba return to work on "Meli-Melo." Some of the people behind the sequel had this to say:

There were plans for a smartphone release before the development of the previous game, but since it costs a lot to start from scratch on smartphones, we first made a solid game for console, and are making use of those assets for smartphones.

It was also indicated in the magazine that the "World of Final Fantasy" series will "continue to spread out in the future," which means that more titles could be released.

Expanding the franchise does not come as a surprise since the original sold 800,000 copies and "had the support of fans overseas." Its move to the mobile platform with "World of Final Fantasy: Meli-Melo" is expected to earn them a new group of audience.
