World Vision (WV) Albania and its partners dedicated a fifth rehabilitation center for children with disabilities last Monday.
Through a project called Different but Equal, the international Christian relief and development organization joined forces with local government institutions and commune leaders to establish the fifth center in the Shushica commune. About 340 children from the six communes in Elbasan district receive physical, speech and social integration therapy from the centers. In addition, the center provides advice and information to parents of the children with disabilities.
Children do not only come to the centers to get help but they come here to have fun, World Vision staff member Zyhra Bedalli said in a report.
Besides Shushica commune, the other four centers - located in Bradashesh, Gjinar, Gjergjan and Shirgjan in the district of Elbasan have been operating for the last two months.
One of the worlds largest Christian relief and development organizations, World Vision has received recognition from the local organizations and media for integrating children with disabilities into public schools. In 2005, most of the children with disabilities attending the centers were registered in public schools. Those that were not registered were either not of school age or were unable to because of their physical limitations.
