More than three children per 10,000 under the age of five are dying daily from malnutrition, according to Sarah Carr, a Canadian nutritionist serving in Niger.

Niger is a landlocked north central African nation. Current international standards state that when two per 10,000 die it is considered an emergency. When that level reaches 4 per 10,000 it indicates a severe situation.
