WWII Veteran Graduates From College After 10 Years
A retired World War II veteran is proving once again that you are never too old to go back to school after he earned his degree from Brooklyn's Kingsborough Community College.
Joseph Pinsky, 85, put on a cap and gown for the first time since he graduated high school after he earned enough credits to receive his associate's degree after nearly a decade at the school.
The retired grandfather explained that is was actually his wife who gave him the idea to go back to school.
"I asked him, 'What are you going to do when you retire? You have to do something,'" Pinsky's wife, Rosalind, told WLNY.
Pinksy stated that at first he was not considering going to school full time and only went there in the beginning "to waste time because she said, 'Get out of the house.'"
But over the semesters, Pinsky became more comfortable and eventually looked forward to attending his classes.
"Believe it or not, working with young people, it was stimulating and they treated me like one of the group," Pinsky said, adding that "it keeps your mind active, and that's important."
It took 10 years because both he and his wife faced certain medial issues which caused him to miss time during the school years, but Pinsky explained that his wife was behind him every step of the way.
He also gave advice for other retirees who may have trouble getting used to retirement.
"Keep active, get out of the house for a couple of hours a day. It will do you a big favor and whoever is home with you, it will do wonders for them," Rosalind Pinsky said.
Pinsky studied aviation mechanics in high school and enlisted in the military straight out of high school in 1944. After returning home Pinsky got a job at the U. S. Postal Service and worked there until his retirement as a supervisor, according to WLNY.
