'X-Men: Supernova' Latest News: Simon Kinberg in Talks to Direct Next 'X-Men' Movie

Producer and screenwriter Simon Kinberg is reportedly in talks with 20th Century Fox to write and direct the next "X-Men" movie, rumored to be titled "X-Men: Supernova."

According to a report by Collider's Steve Weintraub, multiple sources have revealed that the writer-producer is looking to make his directorial debut with the forthcoming "X-Men" film and that he has already written its screenplay.

Kinberg is no stranger to the X-Men Cinematic Universe. The screenwriter and producer has been involved with the "X-Men" franchise as a writer and producer since the 2006 film "X-Men: The Last Stand." He has also been attached to and worked on the recent lineup of mutant superhero movies such as "X-Men: First Class," "X-Men: Days of Future Past," and "X-Men: Apocalypse."

Reports of Kinberg's potential directorial debut in "X-Men: Supernova" began surfacing after it was reported last week that "X-Men: Apocalypse" and "Game of Thrones" star Sophie Turner has plans to film the next "X-Men" movie later this year.

The young actress recently spoke with HeyUGuys on the red carpet at the 2017 British Academy Film Awards held this month. She was asked about her forthcoming film and TV projects to which she replied: "We're about to start shooting the next 'X-Men,' we've just finished shooting Season 7 of '[Game of] Thrones,' and I've got a couple of movies to do before 'X-Men' starts. And then we go on to Season 8."

There are currently two "X-Men" films reported to be in development – Josh Boone's "New Mutants" and the rumored "X-Men: Supernova" – which makes it difficult to ascertain what upcoming "X-Men" movie Turner was talking about.

Since "New Mutants" is supposed to be a young-adult spin on the X-Men universe featuring a new cast, "Supernova" is most likely the movie that would require Turner's presence. This is considering rumors suggesting the film would be focusing on the Dark Phoenix storyline which centers on Turner's character, Jean Grey.

The rumored "X-Men: Supernova" is just one of several movies lined up for development and future release in the X-Men Cinematic Universe. Aside from "New Mutants," "Deadpool 2" and "Deadpool 3" starring Ryan Reynolds are also being developed.
