Xbox One and PS4 News: Cross-Network Play Can Leave Owners Updating Their Consoles Often, Says Microsoft

The possibility of a cross-network play between Xbox One and PS4 may leave console owners updating their consoles more often. This is what Microsoft Xbox head Phil Spencer insinuated according to CBC News.

"When you look at the console space, I believe we will see more hardware innovation in the console space than we've ever seen. You'll actually see us come out with new hardware capability during a generation allowing the same games to run backward and forward compatible because we have a Universal Windows Application running on top of the Universal Windows Platform that allows us to focus more and more on hardware innovation without invalidating the games that run on that platform," Spencer said anew in his recent statement at the recent Spring Showcase event.

Pundits believe that the statement of the Spencer bodes well for the emergence of a new generation of consoles from the company as it adapts to the ever-changing technology associated with digital gaming. There are some who opine that it can be Xbox One's preparation for an inevitable clash with PS4.

Previously, Microsoft announced the chances for both Microsoft and Xbox One console to have a cross-network play. In response, Sony said that its PlayStation is open to the idea of a cross-console play without mentioning Xbox Live in specific. It also stressed that it has been supporting cross-platform games between PC and on other software titles, citing Final Fantasy 11 on PS2 and PC back in 2002 as an example. When asked directly whether the company is willing to work with Microsoft, it dodged the question and only answered that Sony is happy to talk with any publishers or developers interested in coming up with a cross platform game.

For the part of Microsoft, though, whether the cross-platform plan pushes through or not, gaming consoles should be designed in a way that will make them upgradeable, just like how things are with the PC platform.
