Xbox One Kinect: Microsoft Executive Wishes it 'Wasn't a Requirement' and 'a Joke'
A Microsoft executive recently spoke out about the Xbox One and Kinect, and wishes the voice and camera device was an add-on instead of a requirement.
"I actually wish Kinect wasn't a requirement. It feels like an unnecessary add-on to me. Maybe it's because we're in England, and it doesn't really use the TV stuff, but it feels more and more like a joke," said Peter Molyneux of Microsoft to In an Edge. "My son and I sit there saying random things at it, and it doesn't work. They could cost-reduce it [by removing Kinect]. I'm sure they're going to release an Xbox One without Kinect. It would be unthinkable that they wouldn't. "
The cost-reduce Molyneux is referring to could help shave off $100 that separate Xbox with the PS4, and would put them in the same realm as each other.
In another interview, co-founder, Ed Fries, of the Xbox Project thought the Xbox One could overtake the PlayStation 4 in sales by making better use of the Kinect. "They need to show people why they included the new Kinect on every machine by demonstrating a compelling use for it," he said on an AMA on Yabbly.
"They need better exclusive games than PS4," Fries said when asked how the company's sales could improve. "They need to be more open to indie developers. They need to adopt free-to-play gaming more aggressively. They need to continue to move Xbox Live forward as the leading online service."
In other news, recently Microsoft announced some details for the next console update.
The first update will involve more support for the Blu-ray player, and will make the video output support 50Hz as well as 60Hz. More updates to the console include controller and wireless connectivity.
IGN is also reporting a "Silent Reboot" function will be added to the console as well. This will allow the Xbox to update automatically if it is switched to Instant On mode, and then have it power off to Standby.
Microsoft also hinted that digital sharing could be making a return to the console after the company nixed the idea back in the summer.
