XBox Project Scorpio News: Console to be Featured at Microsoft E3 2017 Event

Microsoft has moved its briefing for this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) to a Sunday, June 11, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time (PDT). The company's announcement simply says, "Brace for big news," accompanied by a promo image of its upcoming Xbox Project Scorpio.

While the company has not announced it outright, it looks like Xbox fans will get to hear more about Microsoft's mystery console. So far the system has remained as codename Project Scorpio and it is not yet definite if it would be a next-generation platform, or if it is a same-gen iteration similar to the Xbox One S.

Project Scorpio has been first announced at last year's E3, where it has been dubbed "an uncompromised gaming machine." Microsoft is building what it claims to be "the most powerful console ever" in its bid to take back the performance lead from Sony's PlayStation 4 Pro.

The mystery system is rumored to have 6 teraflops of graphics processing unit (GPU), an 8-core central processing unit (CPU) and 320 GB/s of memory bandwidth. It will be designed to support virtual reality (VR) and games running at 4K resolution at 60 frames per second (fps).

Compare this with the current PlayStation 4 Pro with its 4.12 teraflops GPU, a similar 8-core CPU and 218 GB/s memory bandwidth.

The company has designed Project Scorpio with continuity in mind. Previous games and peripherals for the Xbox One and Xbox One S will still be fully compatible with the new console.

Microsoft's E3 briefing will happen on the Sunday before E3 2017. The actual E3 event will take place June 13–15, 2017 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. For the first time ever, the expo is open to the public, with a limited number of tickets available.
