Yoshi's New Island Release Date Set for March 14
Yoshi's New Island will be released for the 3DS in North America on March 14.
Nintendo confirmed this information in announcement earlier today. The game will be available for purchase in retail locations and from the Nintendo 3DS eShop on that date.
Yoshi's New Island was first announced last April and finds the green dinosaur carrying Baby Mario to safety across a bunch of new locations. The art style used for the game is similar to older Yoshi titles such as the original Yoshi's Island as both feature the same creative director Takashi Tezuka.
"It's just been a long time since there's been a Yoshi game, so I wanted to put another one out there," said Tezuka to IGN.com in a chat back in June. "The first time you see Yoshi is in a Mario game. It would have been ideal if there was a Yoshi game first, where you would get to know Yoshi, and then you could see him appear in a Mario game. That's something I've thought about as I look back and reflect on the series."
The game was first announced by Nintendo's President Satoru Iwata at this year's E3. A new Yoshi's Island had been rumored for a long time. The first installment in the series was released for the original DS in 2006. The new version features the same game mechanics with moves such as flutter jump, ground pound and egg throwing along with some new 3DS gyroscope features.
"So that's one reason I really want to put out another Yoshi game, so people will get to know Yoshi as a character again," he continued. "This new 3DS game is a sequel, basically, to the first Yoshi's Island. It takes place after that."
It will be released in Europe around the same time.
