Christianity and Mental Health Awareness Month
Mental Health Awareness Month serves as a reminder of the profound connection between Christianity and mental well-being.
Christians are not immune to mental health challenges (and nor should we ever be ashamed to admit that we are struggling). So how do we incorporate our faith into our journey to nurture a healthy mind?
The Role of Faith in Mental Health
As Christians, we believe that God is the root of strong, sustainable, and enduring mental health. God cares for our whole being—mind, body, and spirit.
Philippians 4 tells us we need not be anxious about anything. Jesus tells us in John 14 that our hearts do not need to be troubled. Galatians 5 tells us that the fruit of the Spirit involves joy and peace (and much more!).
Living a full, abundant life in Christ amid suffering and uncertainty is a unique Christian opportunity.
However, you’ll quickly realize that the scriptural promises concerning mental health don’t necessarily come easily. Why? Because God’s kingdom is both 'now' and 'not yet'. It is not fully perfected on earth (yet), although we can see some of it now.
It is OK to struggle with our mental health as Christians. You are not the only one. The Bible is full of people struggling with mental health. We can openly express our emotions to God. Because He is close and compassionate.
Practical Steps in Faith and Mental Wellness
Scripture provides answers to our deepest human needs, primarily by pointing us to Jesus, but also practically by shaping what that journey looks like. The Bible is our invaluable manual for Christian mental health.
Here are four things to consider doing that can impact your mental health as a Christian:
- Spend time in God’s presence. For the anxious, busy, and overwhelmed. Find space in your life for prayer and Bible reading. We need moments of stillness, and we need the power of the Holy Spirit to give us the strength to process all of life's challenges and issues.
- Rest. For the stressed and exhausted. Jesus is the source of true rest. Come to Him, and He will give you rest.
- Don’t do it alone. The church is a body. When one part hurts, everyone hurts. Be courageous and seek out help. Remember, our minds, just as our bodies, require care from health professionals. Consider consulting a Christian mental health provider.
- Trust God. As Christians, we believe that God is the key to wellness. Trust Him today. Lean on Him. He is with you.
