'16 & Pregnant' Star Ashley Salazar Has Miscarriage: 'Everything Happens for a Reason,' Star Says

"16 & Pregnant" star Ashley Salazar was thrilled to be expecting her second child, especially given that she had put her first child up for adoption. Unfortunately, Salazar recently learned that the pregnancy was not viable and she had a miscarriage.

"It has been really hard," she told Radar Online. "I guess it wasn't meant to be, but I was prepared [for the worst], because at my eight-week checkup the doctor told me I was only measuring at six weeks."

As it turned out, Salazar's doctor informed her that she had a "blighted ovum," which means that the embryo had successfully attached to the uterine wall, but for some reason the embryo just did not develop. Even though Salazar was still having a "normal" pregnancy "with a growing stomach," there was not embryo. Everything had simply stopped developing.

"The doctor told me that I was going to have a miscarriage and that there was nothing I could have done to prevent that. They said that 50 percent of all pregnancies end in a miscarriage. We were really, really sad," she said of herself and boyfriend Justin Lane. "We had been really excited about having another baby, but learning that it wasn't happening so early was a blessing I guess. We were crying and upset and hurt."

She chose to have a D&C, where the uterus is scraped clean, at the same hospital where she gave birth to daughter Callie, now 4.

"I love it there," she said. "I was kind of scared, but they put me under and I was comfortable the whole time. There was no pain whatsoever, and I didn't bleed for long at all."

Salazar and Lane plan to keep trying to have another child but may take some time to work on their relationship and possibly get engaged.

"I think that is when my relationship with Justin will be even better. And even though I was upset, I know everything happened for a reason. We had tough times in our relationship but this clearly wasn't the right time to have a baby," Salazar explained.
