2015's Most Dangerous Toys: These Toys Can Harm and Kill, Say Reports
Two separate reports have named this year's most dangerous toys that present a wide range of potential harm to children, from choking to allergies to physical injuries.
"Trouble in Toyland" report
Non-profit U.S. Public Interest Research Group released its 30th annual survey of toy safety this month. The report is titled "Trouble in Toyland" and highlights the following potentially unsafe toys:
- A Fun Bubble jump rope contains toxic chemicals including DEHP, a banned phthalate (10 times the legal limit), and DIBP, another toxic phthalate
- These toys are very loud (but within federal standards) and can potentially cause hearing damage: Leap Frog Fridge Phonics Magnetic Letter Set, Fisher Price Click n Learn Remote, and Vtech's Go! Go! Smart Wheels, Go! Go! Smart Animals, and Spin & Learn Color Flashlight
- A fairy wand, Disney Pixar Cars Riplash Racers, Disney Planes, G2 Air Mini Football, Disney Finding Nemo Dory figurine, and Nickelodeon Dora the Explorer mermaid contain small parts that can cause choking.
- Sizzlers noise magnets and Singing magnets also have small parts that can be swallowed and cause severe internal damage.
- Balloon Animal Kit, Mega Value Pack 12 Water Bomb Packs, and Mega Value Pack 16 Latex Punch Balloons also contain choking hazards and a confusing label.
- Magic Towels do not have the appropriate small ball warning.
W.A.T.C.H's "10 Worst Toys" to avoid during the 2015 holiday
In a separate effort, non-profit and unsafe toy watchdog, World Against Toys Causing Harm, Inc. (W.A.T.C.H.) also released its 43rd annual report this month. The report listed the top 10 most harmful toys of 2015 as follows:
- "BUD" Wheely Cute Pull Along (choking hazard)
- Foam Dart Gun (realistic weapon)
- Stat 38 Quick Folding Trampoline (physical injuries, paralysis, or death)
- Poo-Dough (allergic reactions)
- Smack Shot (eye injuries)
- Kick Flipper (head and impact injuries)
- TMNT Leonardo's Electronic Stealth Sword (blunt force injuries)
- Kid Connection Doctor Play Set (ingestion and choking hazard)
- Pull Along Zebra (entanglement and strangulation)
- Jurassic World Velociraptor Claws (choking hazard, eye and facial injuries)
Most of these toys contain small parts that can cause choking to children. The weapon-type toys, trampoline, and Smack Shot can cause injuries to the head, neck, and other parts of the body. The Poo-Dough can cause hives, headaches, difficulty breathing, and even anaphylaxis to children who are allergic to wheat. Meanwhile, the Pull Along Zebra, which has a non-standard 21-inch string, can cause children to be tangled or worse strangulated.
