2017 BMW i8 Specs, Price, Reviews: Hybrid Power and Performance Design Combined in One Sharp-Looking Package
The BMW i8 is supposed to be something of a limited-edition novelty, part concept and part production that combines hybrid power with a performance car design. Immense demand, however, has pushed this unique looking hybrid to the forefront.
Even with double the production, though, the model runs to just about 5,000 as of this year, according to CNET. Much of it may have to do with the aggressively futuristic design, and the sticker price may have contributed as well.
With prices starting at $143,400, this puts the 2017 BMW i8 far above the price range of other hybrids. The layout also pegs this as more of a statement car as well, with the unique, assertive dihedral doors proving to be an adventure to get in and out of every time, as Car and Driver notes.
The engine in the i8 is mounted in the middle and is a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbocharged engine that puts out 228 horsepower. All of it is directed to the rear, giving the 2017 BMW i8 its driving characteristics, while the car's electric motors output their power to the front.
This effectively gives the i8 an all-wheel-drive powertrain that puts out a total of 357 horsepower, all told. Electric power is stored in a 7.1 kWh battery, which takes the car about 15 miles by itself.
Using just the gasoline engine, the i8 gets 28 miles to the gallon. With the hybrid mode engaged, however, MPGe jumps up to 76 miles per gallon as determined by the EPA.
The i8 can be plugged in to charge its battery, much like a Tesla or a Prius. Most of the time, however, the gas engine is the one doing the charging, pulling double duty as an on-board generator for the battery. Regenerative braking, where applying brakes capture the energy as additional electrical power, also helps in the process.
The interior is amply furnished, with very comfortable front seats. The rear seats look like an afterthought compared to them, with cramped rear space that could only seat small children. It's a comfortable ride all around, though, a testament to BMW's focus on daily driving as well as performance.
