2017 Honda Civic Type R Release Date, Specs News: Hot Hatch Coming to the US This Spring
The 2017 Honda Civic Type R finally broke cover at the Geneva Motor Show. The newest high-performance version of the Japanese automaker's compact car is highly anticipated, especially by U.S. consumers as it will be the first Type R-badged vehicle that will be sold stateside.
Dubbed as the "most powerful, quickest, fastest and most agile Civic ever," the hot hatchback is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged and direct-injected i-VTEC in-line four-cylinder engine that delivers 306 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The powertrain is exclusively mated to a six-speed manual transmission.
The 2017 Honda Civic Type R is equipped with a new body and chassis that builds on the improvements that were incorporated in the 10th-generation Civic. Specifically, the high-performance hatch comes with upgraded spring, damper and bushing settings; retuned electric power steering; and a helical limited-slip front differential. New components include a Dual-Axis front suspension and a four-wheel Adaptive Suspension system.
The new Type R also comes with a more rigid body due to the use of ultra-high strength steel and structural adhesive. As a result, the 2017 Type R is 35 pounds lighter than its predecessor and 15 pounds lighter than the 2017 Civic hatchback. It also enhances steering response and cornering stability while at the same time reducing vibrations and cabin noise.
There will be three driving modes: Comfort, Sport and +R. Owners will be able to adjust steering and throttle response, transmission rev-matching, Vehicle Stability Assist and the Adaptive Damper system.
The 2017 Civic Type R will be available in a single trim — Touring. Standard features include lightweight bucket front seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift boot, aluminum shift knob, aluminum sport pedals, red Type R driver's meter, serialized Type R badging on the center console and 20-inch black aluminum alloy wheels
Furthermore, available technologies include a 7-inch Display Audio infotainment system with navigation and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. There is also a 540-watt, 12-speaker audio system with HD and satellite radio as well as Pandora compatibility.
The 2017 Honda Civic Type R is currently on display at the annual trade show in Geneva and it will make its U.S. debut at the New York International Auto Show on April 12. The hot hatch will go on sale in late spring with a price range of about $35,000. More details will be announced closer to the vehicle's official launch.
