2018 Toyota Yaris Release Date, Specs News: Sportier Compact Hatch to Debut at NYIAS 2017

Toyota has introduced the 2018 Yaris before its official debut at the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) next month. The subcompact hatchback has been refreshed with a sportier design and more safety and convenience features.

The updated Yaris will be available in three-door and five-door body styles and three trims: L, LE and Sporty SE for the five-door model.

In terms of design, the 2018 Yaris builds on the styling of its European counterpart and adds sportier and dynamic elements. Specifically, the front fascia looks bolder with a new grille and chrome accents. Meanwhile, the restyled rear has a wider appearance thanks to new horizontal tail lamps, rear bumper and lower bumper garnish with side reflectors.

On the other hand, the SE trim gains a piano black mesh pattern grille that is highlighted by chrome accents and 16-inch machined alloy wheels with dark accents.

Inside the cabin, the 2018 Yaris has been equipped with a new Entune entertainment system that includes a 6.1-inch touchscreen display, six speakers, auxiliary audio jack, USB 2.0 port with iPod connectivity, voice recognition, hands-free phone capability, music streaming via Bluetooth and Siri Eyes Free.

Meanwhile, the SE trim upgrades the display to 7 inches and comes with additional features such as navigation, satellite radio and HD radio.

Toyota has not announced powertrain details but it is expected that the new Yaris will feature the previous generation's 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 106 horsepower and 103 pound-feet of torque. It will be mated to either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission.

Though the Yaris is one of the least expensive vehicles in Toyota's lineup, that doesn't mean that consumers will get the short end of the stick. The subcompact hatchback is a great choice especially for those on a budget. The latest iteration comes with Toyota Safety Sense-C driver-assist technologies, specifically Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert and Automatic High Beams.

The 2018 Toyota Yaris will arrive at dealerships this summer. Pricing has yet to be announced. Meanwhile, NYIAS 2017 will he held from April 14 to 23.
