'47 Meters Down' News: Sequel Release Date Announced
The sequel to the first "47 Meters Down" film finally has a release date. Earlier this week, it was confirmed that the sequel, titled "48 Meters Down," will hit theaters on June 28, 2019 and will feature a totally different story and cast.
Directed by Johannes Roberts, the indie shark thriller "47 Meters Down" had its theatrical release last June and was widely acclaimed for its stellar cast and unique story that veered away from the narratives of typical shark movies released in recent years. Due to its smashing success, it is not surprising that the film is getting a sequel.
The synopsis for "48 Meters Down" reveals that the film will be set in Brazil, where five young men of different nationalities and backgrounds will be united by their love for life and adventure. In the upcoming film, they will go on a trip to the coastal metropolis of Recife, where they will all agree to ignore the tourist trail and explore a hidden underwater ruin instead. What they do not know is that the caves where an ancient city lies are home to the most dangerous shark species in the ocean.
The story of "48 Meters Down" is totally different from the original film, which focused on two sisters who ventured into shark-infested waters by going cage diving in hopes of catching a glimpse of the deadly creatures under the sea without being attacked. However, a mechanical failure caused the cage to fall to the bottom of the ocean.
For the upcoming film, Roberts, who also recently directed "Strangers: Prey at Night," will return to direct and write the script alongside "47 Meters Down" screenwriter Ernest Riera. According to reports, Entertainment Studios recently acquired the distribution rights for the upcoming film, which is set to hit theaters on June 28, 2019.
