The two top South Korean mobile companies, Samsung and LG, are joining forces to lead research and development efforts in developing 5G technology for mobile telecommunications, according to reports. Samsung made the announcement through an official blog post, saying that they will work with LG's mobile operating unit, LG U+, to push for 5G technology.
This is said to be a strategic move for both companies as it solidifies their position in the global telecommunications market and also builds up their reputation as pioneers in a very competitive market. 5G is considered to be the logical next step after the development of 4G technology, which at this point is not as widespread, a report in Tech Times stated.
Samsung Electronics executive vice president of R&D in Network Business Dong Soo Park said in a statement, "This partnership will help us drive R&D, which in turn will power innovation in the global telecommunications industry." He also said that 5G networks will likely "require the combination of several new technologies, which will be brought together by Samsung and LG in the partnership."
LG on the other hand, through LG U+ executive vice president of Service and Development Sun Tae Kim, said that both companies are "looking to become leaders in the new technology, not just in South Korea but in the whole world."
During a special event where both companies sat down to sign a memorandum of understanding, discussion also led to an agreement that the year 2020 will be what is considered the "5G Readiness Target."
The partnership will have three areas of cooperation: 5G global spectrum identification and acquisition, 5G technology co-development and 5G technology global standardization. 5G technology is expected to boost the capabilities of mobile data, while reducing network latency and operating costs, which is naturally good for consumers. Industry partnerships such as this will ensure that resources are shared and maximized so that 5G technology development will be achieved.
