All 'Uncharted 4' DLC will be free, unlockable through gameplay

Developer Naughty Dog has detailed the multiplayer aspect of its upcoming action-adventure shooter "Uncharted 4: A Thief's End." The developer will be making all downloadable content like maps and modes free for all players, meaning everything can be earned by playing.

Relics, the game's currency, can only be acquired through regular play. In effect, Relics can be viewed as Naughty Dog's reward for the game's loyal fans as the more they play, the more they'll earn the in-game currency. Relics can be used to buy weapons, boosters, and cosmetic items.

Micro-transactions will still be around for the more impatient players too. By buying "Uncharted Points," players can get vanity items and weapons, though there will be no exclusive items as everything can be unlocked through gameplay.

Content updates, which include new maps, modes, weapons, skins, and other items, will be rolled out to everyone on the same day. Naughty Dog plans to deliver these free updates seasonally until at least spring 2017. For instance, the developer plans to introduce the Cinema Replay feature in the summer, while a co-op feature will be added in autumn. Cinema Replay allows players to save and share their gameplay footage. The feature was available in previous "Uncharted" games.

By keeping multiplayer content free and generally available to players at roughly the same time, Naughty Dog hopes to keep the "Uncharted 4" community unified.

"This means that the Uncharted 4 Multiplayer community won't be fragmented by different types of DLC, and that those who are loyal in participating in the community will be rewarded," Robert Cogburn, lead game designer, said in a post at the PlayStation Blog. "Our DLC release approach will represent an entirely new direction for Naughty Dog, and we are confident it will have a hugely positive impact and keep the Uncharted 4 Multiplayer community thriving."

"Uncharted 4" will release on May 10 for the PlayStation 4. It will arrive with the following modes: Team Deathmatch, Command, and Plunder, and bot matches. A single-player, the first in the series, is also in the works.
