Allan Mayefsky and Katie Holmes Fight to Keep New York Divorce Battleground
Divorce lawyer Allan Mayefsky and celebrity client Katie Holmes are preparing for an epic divorce battle against one of the most powerful actors in Hollywood, Tom Cruise. It is believed that their first fight will be to keep the divorce in NYC as opposed to California, where Cruise is sure to want the divorce settled.
Mayefsky, a reportedly ruthless New York divorce attorney, has been hired by Holmes in her battle to come out on top in her split with Cruise, who turned 50 on Tuesday.
It has now been reported that Holmes made a very tactical move in hiring Mayefsky, and his representation of her immediately tells those who know about the divorce world that Katie Holmes means business and is going all out to get what she wants from the split with her husband.
Mayefsky is well known for representing Peter Cook when he divorced Christie Brinkley. According to The Daily Beast legal analyst and author Lisa Bloom has said, "She's making it clear she's going to play tough. Cruise is more of a high-profile celebrity than she is, so he has a greater distance to fall if grievances are aired."
Bloom added, "Everyone has dirty laundry they don't want aired. She's saying play fair with me or else … Of course she would choose an experienced and tough lawyer. But the fact that she'd choose someone who's been known to go to media in the past signals that she might have hired him for that reason."
Mayefsky is a Harvard graduate and is a partner in firm Aronson Mayefsky & Sloan. He is well known to specialize in high profile, potentially messy divorce cases, and in particular is sought after when one half of the marital body has far less assets than the other half.
Tom Cruise is sure to also name a high profile team of lawyers, and they will see their first fight to get the courts to move the divorce battle to California. Holmes has filed for divorce in New York, a state which potentially favors her position more than California.
Tom Cruise is said to have canceled his 50th birthday plans on Tuesday and simply spent a day with his other two children. Reports have alleged that he has been left shocked by Holmes' sudden filing for divorce and has been trying to come to terms with the end of his marriage over the past few days.
