'Alone With You' PC Review: Game Praised for Realistic Images, Gripping Narrative
"Alone With You" is the first new title of Benjamin Rivers since "Home," which was released in 2012 and centered on a lone planetary survivor. Unlike the other game, "Alone With You" does not abandon the player to a solitary fate, but guides him in reconstructing whatever has been damaged, including versions of dead colonists.
On the surface, the game features a distinctive color palette that is mostly blue, purple and pink. Its overall look reflects the image of abandoned landscapes and laboratories and its background music suggests that it is set in a different era.
Since "Alone With You" was released last year on the PS4, nothing much has changed. When it debuted on PC this year, it has retained its retro style and its frame rate of 30 fps.
The game opens with an introduction that establishes the relationship of the player and the Al, as well as the doomed fate of the Terraforming colony. The game brings the player into the regular pattern of combing through wrecked colony buildings and playing a grim archeologist by day, and spending time with one of the four holograms by night, where he relays his discoveries and progress.
According to PC Invasion, while the game looks monotonous at first, it features urgent breaks in the routine. Inside communication and energy facilities, the player does not only examine and recover objects but also solves puzzles. There are instances when the player needs to find the password to open a locked door, but it is the Al that provides most of the guidance.
Furthermore, the publication adds that the strength of the game mostly lies in its effective unravelling of the story of the colony and their fate. The game also succeeds in showcasing the brilliance of the four holograms without taking their human flaws out of the equation. It also successfully explores and captures the desolation and psychological trauma, as well as the scientific dilemmas caused by the conditions of the player after being left in space with nothing and no one but Al.
Despite being able to effectively depict the aforementioned elements of the game, "Alone With You" is still able to present its narrative in such a way that the players can draw their own conclusions. It is a great mix of tragedy, sadness, hope and romance that profoundly examines how humans make choices by using the sci-fi lens. Its gripping narrative, emotions and images make the game stay with players even after it is over.
