Amanda Knox News: Guilty Verdict May Disrupt Wedding Plans With Colin Sutherland
A guilty verdict in Amanda Knox's most recent trial may derail her wedding plans with musician fiancé Colin Sutherland.
After battling a trial from an Italian prison for four years for the 2007 murder of her roommate, Meredith Kercher, receiving acquittal and freedom in 2011, then facing another retrial in January this year, a guilty verdict and conviction may altogether dissolve Amanda Knox's wedding plans with fiancé, musician Colin Sutherland.
If Knox and her co-accused, ex-boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, are found guilty and given a 28-year prison sentence, they remain free. In Italian law, a guilty verdict does not automatically segue to a conviction until all appeals have been exhausted.
With the retrial set for March 25, a guilty verdict may put Knox's and Sutherland's wedding on hold indefinitely.
Knox had earlier announced she will not return to Italy willingly, which may put both the U.S. and Italy in an difficult situation if and when the Italian court moves to implement a guilty verdict.
Knox met her fiancé, Sutherland, when they were in kindergarten, and Sutherland wrote to Knox during the four years she was in prison in Italy. When Knox returned to the United States in 2011 to rebuild her life, she and Sutherland renewed their friendship and recently announced their engagement last month.
While Knox and Sutherland have yet to announce a wedding date, Sutherland has already moved from Seattle to New York to be with his fiancée.
Knox was first arrested and accused in 2007 after her roommate, Meredith Kercher, was found murdered in their shared room in an Italian dorm. She was originally sentenced to 26 years in jail along with Sollecito and Rudy Guede. She was acquitted together with Sollecito and released in 2011, but an Italian court recently upturned the acquittal and called for a retrial in January 2015.
