Amazon Axes 'Z: The Beginning of Everything' After Renewing Show
After confirming the renewal of "Z: The Beginning of Everything" for another cycle, Amazon has reversed its decision on the series. Several days ago, the network announced that it would cancel the show after its debut season.
Amazon has yet to reveal the reason behind the show's cancellation, but rumor has it that the decision to not renew the show was brought about by the network's plan to spend more on original programming next year. According to reports, Amazon had already spent an estimated $7 million on preproduction for the sophomore season of the series along with the opening of a writers' room before the cancellation.
"Z: The Beginning of Everything" was not the first show to be canceled after being renewed. HBO series "Vinyl" and "The Brink," as well as VH1's "Hindsight," were also renewed for another season before their respective networks eventually axed them.
Created by "The Killing" and "Carnivale" executive producers Dawn Prestwich and Nicole Yorkin, and executive-produced by Pamela Koffler and Christine Vachon and several others, the first season of "Z: The Beginning of Everything" starred Christina Ricci as Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald; David Hoflin as Fitzgerald's husband, novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald; Kristine Nielsen and David Strathairn. The other cast members include Jamie Anne Allman, Corey Cott, Jordan Dean, Natalie Knepp, Christina Bennett Lind and Holly Curran.
In the series, Zelda was a socialite from the south who wanted to do something different with her life. She then bumps into a young soldier named F. Scott Fitzgerald which gives her the chance to do so. Theirs is known as one of the most popular love stories of the 20th century.
The first season of the series earned mixed reviews from fans and critics and currently has a 69 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The series was based on a novel written by Therese Anne Fowler titled "Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald."
