AMD Ryzen CPU Specs, Price Review: AMD's Ryzen 1800X is Phenomenal Yet Cheaper

Nearly six years ago, AMD debuted their FX line of processors, which were critically panned for their underwhelming performance. Because of the lackluster reception of the company's lineup of processors at the time, the central processing unit (CPU) market became stagnant due to the lack of competition.

However, after six years of being under the radar, AMD has finally risen from the ashes with the launch of its Ryzen processors. And as a counterattack to Intel's heralded Core i7 lineup, it introduced to the tech community the significantly cheaper Ryzen 7 1800X.

The 1800X, along with the other Ryzen chips released, is designed with a new architecture based on the 14 nm manufacturing process. Considered as "king of the hill," the 1800X comes with eight cores, 16 threads, a base clock of 3.7 GHz to 4 GHz, 16 MB of L3 smart cache and a thermal design power (TDP) of 95 watts.

With its launch, many experts have put the 1800X processor to the test. Since then, reviews have come in and the final verdict has so far been very positive overall.

According to a review by Tech Radar, the AMD Ryzen 1800X can easily keep pace when compared against Intel's Core i7-5960X/6900K, and even has stronger single-core instructions per cycle (IPC) than its competitor's high-end desktop (HEDT) alternative. However, the overclocking of the Ryzen 1800X is not as impressive, and its single-core performance still needs improvement.

Nevertheless, the 1800X, as well as the other processors in the Ryzen lineup, provide a cheaper yet competitive alternative for consumers, bringing life back to the once-stagnant processor market.

"Ryzen 7 as a whole is nothing short of phenomenal, with the AMD Ryzen 7 1800X (AMD's flagship CPU) absolutely decimating the competition when it comes to price versus performance," Tech Radar concluded.

Interested tech enthusiasts can try out AMD's Ryzen 1800X processor for themselves by purchasing the well-received chipset for a relatively affordable price of $499.
