'American Gods' TV Series News, Update: 'Hannibal' EP Set to Helm The Show's Pilot

Not much has been heard about the upcoming TV show adaptation of Neil Gaiman's critically-acclaimed novel, "American Gods," but these new developments are sure to bring some delight especially to the fans of the recently-ended NBC series "Hannibal." It has recently been reported that the show, developed by Bryan Fuller for Starz, will also see the involvement of David Slade.

According to Deadline.com, the "Hannibal" showrunner is set to helm the pilot and "several more episodes" of the upcoming fantasy series. Aside from the directing credits, Slade will also be serving as the executive producer of the show, consequently reuniting him with Fuller. Slade has directed a handful of episodes of the Mads Mikkelsen-starred series including its pilot, "Aperitif."

The upcoming show, meanwhile, is currently in pre-production stages and is eyed for a 2017 premiere date. Earlier reports indicated that Neil Gaiman, the book author himself, will be working closely with the project as script writer.

For the uninitiated, the official plot synopsis for the "American Gods" TV series indicates a war "brewing between old and new gods."

The traditional gods, which comprised of deities both of "biblical and mythological roots from around the world" continues to lose their believers over the gods who reflect society's "modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs."

The protagonist, named Shadow Moon, is an ex-convict who got released from prison earlier than expected. After some unexplained and often mystical circumstances, he ended up becoming the bodyguard and traveling partner to a certain Mr. Wednesday.

Although he started off as a conman, Mr. Wednesday was further revealed in the story as one of the major gods of the old times. Both Shadow Moon and the latter go on a cross-country journey with a mission to reunite Mr. Wednesday's forces in preparation to battle the "upstart pantheon of new gods."

Joining Slade and Fuller are Michael Green, Craig Cegielski and Stefanie Berk as executive producers of the FremantleMedia North America-produced series.
