'American Psycho' News: Cast of Theatrical Adaptation Performs 'Selling Out' on Stephen Colbert's Show
Stephen Colbert's April 2 episode was full of narcissistic drama as the cast of "American Psycho: The Musical" graced his stage to the tune of "Selling Out."
While not all members of the awesome cast joined the performance, Benjamin Walker, the star of the musical, took the audience into his deep and wicked world of narcissism. Walker plays the role of the famous and indomitable Patrick Bateman - a role that has become one of the most iconic in the history of novels and big screens.
On Colbert's "Late Show," Walker's Bateman decided to go shirtless and the entire routine - plus the lighting and costumes of his back-up dancers - became an instant sensation on the internet.
The number came days after Bret Easton Ellis talked about the influence of his controversial novel not only in the big screens but also in theatre.
In an interview with The Rolling Stone, the now 52-year-old author said, "You cannot control the popularity of your work. And you cannot control the influence of your work." He also explained that the most notorious character in fiction that he created was "experimental" and he was surprised by how popular Bateman has become.
When asked about how he felt about the changes that his iconic creation has gone through over the years, he described the changes as "complicated." Referring to the novel that has now been turned into a musical, he said, "Every now and then you see things like, 'Dear God this is a musical. How did Bret Ellis let this happen?' Well, Bret Ellis didn't really let anything happen. Ultimately, I don't have a problem with it."
While the author has been very open about his dislike for the movie adaptation, it seems he supports the musical version. In February, Ellis posted a photo of Walker's banner as Bateman on his Twitter account, captioning the image: "The great Ben Walker as PB..."
Also during the lengthy interview, Ellis revealed that he once worked on a script for David Cronenberg during the early 90's and it was being ironed for the young and handsome Brad Pitt. He said he still likes Cronenberg as a person but back then, they had different tastes in terms of setting as the film maker didn't like shooting violence.
"American Psycho: The Musical" is showing on Thursday, 8:00 PM at the Schoenfeld Theater in New York City.
