Behind the high-fidelity visuals and the new soundtrack is the story of Mari that ties all the game's components together. Mari is a nanotechnologist in 2112. Her attempt to induce herself to have synesthesia failed miserably and resulted in the shutting down of her brain. It is the players' goal then to bring her back to life using the Amplitude Operating System to enter her brain and destroy the scarification that protects it.
The game can be played solo or in cooperative and competitive modes with two to four other players.
Those attending the PlayStation Experience this weekend will get a chance to play "Amplitude," as well as receive an exclusive theme for their PlayStation 4 and a trading card.
In May 2015, Harmonix took to Kickstarter to crowdsource funding for the re-imagined classic. "Amplitude" was initially set for release in March.
"Amplitude" will finally be available on the PlayStation Store for $19.99 on Jan. 15, 2016, but Kickstarter backers who gave $40 or more will get their copies two weeks ahead, on Dec. 3. A PlayStation 3 version will be released afterward.
