'Amy Winehouse Knew She Was Going to Die,' Claims Tony Bennett

Tony Bennett has guest-starred on "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" this week to speak about his current number one album "Duets II." However, while on the show he also spoke about recently deceased singer Amy Winehouse; claiming she knew her days were numbered.

"Well she was in trouble at that time because she had a couple of engagements that she didn't keep up," Bennett told Stewart referring to Winehouse.

He continued "But what people didn't realize at that time, that she really knew – in fact, I didn't even know it when we were making the record, now looking at the whole thing – she knew that she was in a lot of trouble, that she wasn't gonna live. And it wasn't the drugs. it was alcohol, toward the end, you know."

Bennett's statement about her alcohol problems proved to be consistent to the coroner’s report of Winehouse's autopsy where no drugs were found in her system, and her family's statement to the press upon her death saying, "There were no illegal substances in Amy's system at the time of her death."

Bennett deeply appreciated and loved Winehouse's music telling Stewart, "It's such a sad thing because, since Elvis Presley and the Beatles and the Rolling Stones and the whole contemporary change that came in, she was the only singer that really sang what I call the 'right way'."

He also told Stewart how Winehouse was shy and a little uneasy when they first got together until he complimented her on her singing ability by comparing her to singing-great Dinah Washington.

Bennett said of Winehouse: “...She was a great jazz-pop singer. She was a great jazz singer. A true jazz singer."

Winehouse sang with Bennett on the song "Body and Soul," making it the last recording before her death.

"Duets II" is Bennett's first Billboard number one album, making him the oldest artist to ever top it.
