Android 4.4 KitKat Update to Be Released for Huawei Ascend P6

The Android 4.4 KitKat update will roll out for the Huawei Ascend P6 in early January.

The company confirmed the news earlier this week. The device currently runs Android 4.2.2, JellyBean.

Huawei did not state if this update would roll out to all Huawei Ascend users, or just those in China. The new software should bring a significant speed boost to the device.

Specifications on the Ascend P6 include a quad-core 1.5GHz Huawei K3V2 CPU with 2GB of RAM, a 4.7-inch 1280x720 IPS display, 8/16GB storage, a microSD slot, a 5-megapixel camera in the front, and an 8-megapixel shooter in the back. It is also known for its ultra-thin design measuring in at only 6.8mm thick.

The Ascend P6 is a low key device and the fact that it is receiving KitKat soon is a good sign for Android users who need a software update but own an older or less popular handset.

Android 4.4 KitKat was introduced by Google earlier this month alongside the brand new Nexus 5 smartphone.

The software is designed to be installed on a wide range of devices including older models that only have 512MB RAM.

"KitKat streamlines every major component to reduce memory use and introduces new APIs and tools to help you create innovative, responsive, memory-efficient applications," said Google on its developer's website.

The software is designed to protect system memory from apps consuming large amounts of RAM. Android will launch the services serially, or in small groups in order to avoid peak memory demands.

It has already rolled out on various devices including certain Nexus models. XDA developers also created ROMs to allow devices to run the software without the official update.
