Android 5.1 News: Which Phones and When?
Even as Android 5.0 Lollipop has yet to reach most types of smartphones, Google has already released an update Android 5.1. The first smartphones to get the update is of course Google's own Nexus phones, as well as Motorola phones according to reports.
Among the Nexus phones, the Nexus 6 was the first to get the update, particularly those on carriers T-Mobile and Verizon. These phones already had the 5.0 out of the box and the update was rolled out starting early March, followed by two incremental build updates until the middle of March, Android Pit reported. As for the Nexus 5, the update's roll out is yet to be confirmed by the carriers, so phone owners who cannot wait can get a hold of the update through the Google developer's site where phone owners can use the factory images from the official developer page.
The Nexus 7, according to the report, is only reported to be receiving the 5.0.2 update, the second build of the 5.0, and there is no word yet when it will get the 5.1 update. The Nexus 4, which is an older smartphone model, is only confirmed to receive the 5.0 update. There are no news yet when the Nexus 9 and Google Play edition devices will get a whiff of the update.
Motorola phones are the ones next in line to receive the 5.1 update. Among the first phone models to get the update is the Moto X 2014, which according to the report was already doing a soak test for select users sometime early March. The soak test was reportedly followed by a wider rollout of the update, which was first to reach unlocked devices.
The report however mentioned that as of reporting time, U.S. carriers are still working on the 5.0.2 for those in their networks, with 5.1 nowhere in sight. Moto X 2013 on the other hand is still undergoing a soak test in Brazil and the report does not say when the official rollout will start.
The Moto G 2013 is not yet receiving the 5.1 update, but is in fact receiving the 5.0.2, according to the report. As for Motorola's entry level phone, the Moto E, it is reported to get the 5.0 update at least.
Android One devices on the other hand already come with the 5.1 update when bought out of the box, according to the report.
