Android L Release Date Rumors: October 2014 Date Being Touted

Google announced during the Google I/O conference earlier this year of the next version of Android, Android L or also known as the Android 5.0. There are rumors though that a Nestle partnership could lead to the OS being named the Android Lion.

As for the release date, there's no official announcement but there are speculations that it will be released on October alongside the Nexus 6 smartphone and the Nexus 9 tablet. Also, seeing as the new operating system is to be released on October, it won't be available for download until Nov. 1.

Google's operating systems always get some kind of candy or desert name and it was first thought that Android L will be Lollipop. However, it is now confirmed to be Lemon Meringue Pie. Previous versions have been named KitKat, Ice Cream Sandwich, and Honeycomb in an alphabetical order.

During the Google I/O conference, the new design language of Android L is called Material Design which offers a cleaner style which developers can make use when making apps. The navigation buttons have also changed in the interface, being changed to a triangle, circle and square.

Some elements have been given depth in such a way that shadows and light sources can affect the user interface in real time.

Some of the new features available for Android L are enhanced notifications, a new lockscreen, new multi-tasking, a new notification bar, a battery saver mode, improved security, and improved performance.

Security features for example have been improved by enabling Android users to unlock the phone when physically near it while wearing an Android wear smartwatch.
