Android One Phones Finally Hit Africa, Boasts Decent Specs For Only $88
Announced back in 2014, the Android One project by Google aims to deliver quality handsets to developing countries. These devices run on the latest Android version and update and come with a cheap price tag.
In order to keep costs low, Google has tapped local phone brands to work on its Android One devices. Doing this will help cut down price tags, which are often kept high by import taxes, customs duties, and other fees.
After a year of focusing on Asia, Google has finally included Africa in its list of countries that have Android One phones.
According to a report by Digital Trends, the search engine giant has just launched the Infinix Hot 2, a midrange device that only costs NGN 17,500 in Nigeria or an equivalent of $88.
Based on the report, the device boasts a 5-inch display with HD (1280 x 720) resolution, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of built-in memory, and a quad-core 1.3GHz MediaTek chipset.
Other notable specs include an 8MP primary camera, 2MP front snapper, dual-SIM support, and a microSD card slot for storage expansion.
The Infinix Hot 2 currently runs on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, although the report mentioned that there will definitely be an update upgrade it to Android 6.0 Marshmallow soon.
Interestingly, the device's 1GB of RAM will be available in most of its color options that include black, white, blue and red. Meanwhile, the gold option has 1GB more RAM.
While the device's specs are pretty basic, the fact that it runs on the latest version of Android should entice consumers to purchase it.
In the report, the Infinix Hot 2 is already available for purchase in Nigeria, although other African countries such as Egypt, Morocco, Ghana, Ivory Coast, and Kenya would get the Android One smartphone soon.
