Android smartphone BlackBerry Venice is now called 'Priv'

It may seem like BlackBerry has been long overshadowed by leading smartphone companies like Samsung and Apple, but the truth is, the QWERTY handheld device manufacturer is not giving up just yet. They're making some noise in the mobile industry, bringing along their signature feature through an upcoming Android smartphone initially dubbed as the BlackBerry Venice.

But according to NDTV Gadgets, the name "BlackBerry Venice" is only an internal code name used to identify it when it first surfaced in June this year. It will be introduced to the public as the BlackBerry Priv, which was tipped by serial leaker Evan Blass. This was then confirmed by n4bb website's sources. Aside from the new name, Blass also posted a new rendered image of the BlackBerry Priv in his @evleaks Twitter account.

As seen in the photo, the BlackBerry Priv will come with a slider QWERTY keyboard, something that they are highly known for in their line of mobile products. And even when they're making a revolution by making a smartphone, they are keeping their iconic physical keyboard for those who are still hankering for it. The image also shows a front-facing speaker placed further below. The top panel is expected to be the location of the SIM card and microSD card slots.

Digital Trends reported that the smartphone will run with Android Lollipop and will sport a 5.4-inch Quad-HD screen with a resolution of 2560 x 1440. Under its hood will be a 1.8GHz 64-bit hexa-core Snapdragon 808 processor along with 3GB of RAM. It is also expected to come with an 18-megapixel rear camera with a dual LED flash. The selfie snapper on the front will be a 5-megapixel shooter. It will have dual-curved edges as a design, which is quite akin to the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus.

Pocket-Lint reported that the BlackBerry Priv may be launched in November and will be available to all four US carriers. There is no word yet on a UK release.
