'Ant-Man and the Wasp' News: 'Ant-Man' Screenwriter Adam McKay Confirms Involvement in Film's Sequel
With Marvel's second "Ant-Man" film, "Ant-Man and the Wasp," still more than two years away, there's not much currently known about the forthcoming sequel. Marvel Studios announced the sequel's release date in October 2015, with director Peyton Reed and stars Paul Rudd (Scott Lang/Ant-Man) and Evangeline Lilly (Hope van Dyne) confirming their return the month after. Writers Andrew Barrer, Gabriel Ferrari, and Rudd were confirmed to again be penning the script in December.
Now, another key figure who worked on "Ant-Man," acclaimed comedy writer Adam McKay, has confirmed that he will be involved in the film's sequel. The announcement indicates that Marvel is bringing in the same creative talents from the first film to give the second a similar feel.
Speaking to Nerdist at the recent Santa Barbara International Film Festival, McKay said, "We've been talking to Marvel actually."
He added: "We just talked to them the other day, and it looks like I will be involved. I don't know if it's gonna be right from page one. But it looks like I will definitely be involved. There you go. There's a little headline for the fanboys!"
McKay, who is famous for the comedy films "Talladega Nights" (2006), "Anchorman" (2004), and "Step Brothers" (2008), recently made a shift toward more serious subject matters with "The Big Short" (2015), which tackles the financial crisis of 2007-2008. The film is up for five Academy Awards, including those for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.
"Ant-Man and the Wasp" is part of Marvel Studios' reshuffling of its Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 3 films, which initially did not include a sequel to "Ant-Man." According to Reed, the sequel will have an "entirely different genre template" from the first film.
"Ant-Man and the Wasp" arrives in cinemas on July 6, 2018. Before that, Ant-Man fans can catch Scott Lang in "Captain America: Civil War," which hits movie theaters on May 6.
