Apology Note to Burglars Invites Criminals Back to Take VHS Tapes and Cassettes
A British couple is making headlines after leaving a note in their home apologizing for "not having much to take" and lacking taste. The couple left the note as a joke and way of coping with the theft.
"Dear Burglars, Thanks for popping by the other night and we're sorry we didn't have more for you to take. As you know, we don't have particularly expensive tastes so there's no need to come in again, unless you'd like to take my collection of VHS videos and cassettes – Don is very disappointed you didn't take these first time round," Kate Barrett wrote in the letter posted to the board where the door should be.
"If you would like them [the VHS tapes], just knock on the front door and ask – no need to break another patio door as it's dreadfully hard working cleaning up all the glass. Thanks for all the finger prints – we really appreciated those. Lots of love, Kate and Dan," the letter concluded.
The couple is focusing rebuilding the home, the windows that were broken out, instead of merely counting their losses, which includes cash, a camera, an iPod and two gold watches.
Barrett and husband Dan Owens posted the letter online, where it has become a viral sensation. They wanted to make light of the situation instead of moping.
"So many people just sit around and mope after being burgled," Barrett told the Telegraph. "I thought it would be a good idea to leave them a note in case they come back or see it on Twitter. It was just our way of dealing with the situation. When I posted it on social networking sites – I never expected the reaction I got."
Barrett and Owens say that the police are investigating the theft and hopefully, due to the abundance of fingerprints, will soon have a lead and be able to make an arrest.
