Apple Devices Boost Cyber Monday Sales in 2011
This year’s Cyber Monday sales were up 33 percent compared to last year due to devices such as Apple's iPhone and the iPad.
The day is normally the biggest shopping day of the year for online retailers and this one was no different with the Internet shopping sector experiencing tremendous growth, according to IBM
The company said online sales were up 33 percent in 2011 for Cyber Monday in comparison to 2010.
Consumers spent an average of $198.26 per online transaction during that day.
“Cyber Monday was once again the big winner for the Thanksgiving holiday shopping season, with a record number of consumers focused on finding the best online deals,” said John Squire, chief strategy officer of IBM’s Smarter Commerce initiative, in a statement today.
Squire applauded retailers who took advantage of the current technology to boost sales.
“Retailers that adopted a smarter approach to commerce, one that allowed them to swiftly adjust to the shifting shopping habits of their customers, whether in-store, online or via their mobile device, were able to fully benefit from this day and the entire holiday weekend,” he added.
This 33 percent sales growth data is based on findings from IBM’s fourth annual Cyber Monday Benchmark that tracks over a million transactions per day.
It analyzes terabytes of raw data from 500 retailers nationwide.
IBM uses this information to provide retailers with input on their business and to help them improve sourcing, inventory management, marketing, sales, and service programs.
Mobile devices seem to play just as big of a role in shopping these days as a personal computer or sales circular. By taking advantage of technology, retailers were able to capitalize on sales during Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
IBM found that 10.8-percent of all online shopping traffic on Monday took place on a mobile device and 6.6-percent of it was conducted on a smartphone or tablet.
To no surprise, Apple’s iPhone and iPad were the two most popular mobile devices used on Cyber Monday by shoppers to make purchases.
