Apple Has Been Sued By Israeli Company Over Dual Lens Camera Technology
Apple is again locked in a legal battle after an Israel company called Corephotonics filed a lawsuit against the tech giant for patent infringement. Corephotonics claims that the dual lens camera technology on the iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8 and 8 Plus infringes on four of their patents.
Tech Times reports that the lawsuit revolves around the following patents: miniature telephoto lens assembly (US 9402032 B2 and US 9568712 B2), optical zoom (US 9185291 B1), and high-resolution thin multi-aperture imaging systems (US 9538152 B2). These were filed in 2013 to 2016. The lawsuit is being represented by Quinn Emanuel Urquhart and Sullivan. This is the same law firm that advised Samsung on the legal battle for the slide to unlock patent, which they lost and resulted in a $120 million compensation awarded to Apple.
"Apple's lead negotiator expressed contempt for Corephotonics' patents, telling Dr. Mendlovic and others that even if Apple infringed, it would take years and millions of dollars in litigation before Apple might have to pay something," the lawsuit claimed, as reported by The Verge.
The lawsuit is beseeching Apple to stop production of the dual lens camera technology immediately. Furthermore, Corephotonics is demanding for monetary compensation for the lawyers, as well as additional damages. Aside from Apple, the lawsuit also indirectly targeted the consumers as they have claimed that those who have been using the devices' latest iPhones, they could be charged with patent infringement as well.
Corephotonics was founded in 2012 by Dr. David Medlovic. As one of its first moves as a company, they had reached out to Apple in an attempt to foster a partnership. Although the meetings were amicable, both parties did not reach an agreement that would result in licensing of the dual lens camera technology. Corephotonics and Apple have not yet responded to any request for comment.
