Apple Has Confirmed That They Are Slowing Down Old iPhones To Prolong Battery Life
Recent reports have revealed that Apple has admitted that they were slowing down older iPhone for the sake of the battery life. Furthermore, critics and experts agree that if anything, Apple should be doing something different instead of forcing older models to be capable of anything less than they original could.
"Lithium-ion batteries become less capable of supplying peak current demands when in cold conditions, have a low battery charge or as they age over time, which can result in the device unexpectedly shutting down to protect its electronic components," Apple said in a statement to The Verge. "Last year we released a feature for iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE to smooth out the instantaneous peaks only when needed to prevent the device from unexpectedly shutting down during these conditions. We've now extended that feature to iPhone 7 with iOS 11.2, and plan to add support for other products in the future."
The throttling effects were reported by Geekbench developer John Pool who took to social media to post the effects of Apple's decision to slow down the processing speed of the older iPhones for the sake of battery life. In particular, the iOS 10.2.1 update is significant as the update was meant to reduce shut down issues of the device.
Further reports indicate that critics and experts agree that instead of slowing down the processing speed of the devices, Apple should give loyal users the option to replace the battery. Considering that the tech giant makes the iPhones hard to open and repair, Apple will have to go through some major changes in terms of basic design. However, because Apple also markets itself as one of the best in terms of customer service, an additional support for battery repair should not be as drastic. Moreover, fans believe that the added service might be worth it in the long run instead of having to replace the devices with newer, more expensive iPhones.
