Apple iPhone 8 Latest News and Rumors: iPhone 8 to Come in OLED and 2 Other Models
These past few days of tech news showcase new leaks for the much anticipated Apple iPhone 8, reviews for the latest version of the iPhone, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, and reactions to the MacBook Pro 2016's new OLED touch bar.
Other Apple related news include a new Apple iOS browser and a possible Holiday treat for Apple fans.
Apple iPhone 8 Leak
According to Ming-Chi Kuo, a KGI Securities who has a reputation for knowing details about Apple products before they are released (some of his revelations include those of the iPhone 7, iPhone 6S and iPhone SE), the new 2017 iPhones will come in three different models. The first model is an OLED model, and the other two are TFT-LCD models; one with a 4.7-inch display and the other a 5.5-inch display. Moreover, the OLED iPhone will have a huge 5.8-inch diagonal.
Gordon Kelly of Forbes points that this new development means good or bad news for the iPhone. From a positive point of view, OLED has a lot of advantages. First, using OLED can help save battery life because they are lighter and thinner than the currently used LCD panels in iPhones. With an OLED screen, a smart phone doesn't need a backlight.
Images displayed through OLED screens look much better too, specifically because they allow for higher contrast ratios. OLED has been used by many of Apple's tech company rivals though, including Samsung.
Along with the upcoming upgrades to the iPhone 8 including the OLED though, comes the risk of distancing more consumers as prices are expected to rise yet again, even reaching the $850-900 range.
MacBook Pro Touch Bar
This week, Apple just launched the latest MacBook Pro with an OLED Touch Bar. Overall, the notebook looked comfortably similar to the 13-inch model, and the USB-C ports were a welcome addition; but the general verdict regarding the new Touch Bar feature remains to be seen.
According to Jacob Kastrenakes of The Verge, not all app-specific touch bar buttons on the screen are useful.
"Take Mail, for example: I love those quick-firing Archive and Spam buttons. But for some reason, the biggest button on the Touch Bar is used for... folder management?! It's a puzzling decision; and while some apps let you edit the Touch Bar's layout, Mail isn't one of them."
Andrew Cunningham of Ars Technica offered his take on the advantages of disadvantages of the OLED touch panel as well. He said that the Touch Bar's utility will depend largely on what apps you will use; it is quite useful if you're using Apple apps, but we are still waiting for a huge number of app makers to add Touch Bar support.
