Apple Watch 2 Specs: Patent Suggests Apple Watch Band Will Transform into a Protective Case and Stand
The Apple Watch 2, which is rumored to have its trial production this month, could come with a multi-purpose magnetic wristband. This information comes through a new patent filing that was spotted recently.
Initially filed on Aug. 31, 2015, a patent invented by Erik G. de Jong and is simply titled as "Magnetic Wristband" was spotted by Apple Insider last week. The patent's abstract describes the magnetic wristband as having a number of configurations.
"In one configuration the wristband is magnetically coupled around a user's wrist," according to the patent's Abstract. "In another configuration the magnetic wristband can be magnetically coupled around an electronic device to which it is attached. In this second described configuration the magnetic wristband acts as a protective cover for the electronic device to which the wristband is attached."
In other words, the patent functions as a magnetic closure, a protective encasement, and a stand when not in use.
Its ability to act as a protective cover should reduce the likelihood of damage on the Apple Watch 2 and make it easier to store. Apple Insider also mentions how this functionality could also help protect the watch's optical heart rate sensor. It basically adds a layer of protection that could help Apple Watch owners save hundreds of dollars in repair costs.
In addition to the aforementioned functions, the magnetic wristband can also attach to a larger magnetic surface like a computer or refrigerator.
The magnetic wristband consists of two separate straps made from malleable material. The straps have a series of magnets in alternating patterns of polarity, which allows the straps to attach to each other.
The patent filing is an indication that Apple is thinking about a magnetic wristband as a potential feature in its upcoming devices. It is not, however, an indication that the proposed feature will be brought to market.
