Apple Watch Series 3 Release Date, Features News: LTE-Enabled Device Hinted At in iOS 11 Leak
The master version of iOS 11 was leaked online, and among the secrets revealed by this inadvertent release are a few details on the upcoming Apple Watch Series 3. The new wearable, which could be unveiled this Tuesday, Sep.12, might depend less an iPhone thanks to LTE capabilities reportedly on the way.
Among the rumored reveals for the Sep. 12 event, taking place at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, California, are the iPhone 8, iPhone 7S, and the Apple Watch 3. The latter could be out later this year, or early 2018, especially if the announcement pushes through this week, according to Tech Radar.
The WatchOS version 4 is still about to come out this fall, so a later reveal is also possible. A recent leak of the iOS 11, however, already hinted at a few features coming to the third edition of the Apple Watch.
The leaked iOS included an image in its Apple Watch app, and the picture could be of the third-gen Apple Watch with LTE capabilities. If true, this could mean that the new Apple Watch could now carry on without an iPhone, with the new wrist-worn device having a cellular connection of its own.
The leaked photo shows an Apple Watch in its Space Gray variant and matching band, almost indistinguishable from a Series 2 watch, except for a bright red Digital Crown on the right side. As to what this color suggests, the code in the leaked iOS 11 might have an answer.
The new Apple Watch may be able to make calls over LTE, and could make use of the phone number on an iPhone. It has been hinted that carriers will soon be starting to offer special plans for the Apple Watch, according to Mac Rumors.
A watchOS screenshot captured by 9 to 5 Mac shows the possible changes to the Control Center, showing a cellular signal indicator. Fans can look forward to today as Apple may confirm their new Apple Watch 3, which is rumored to be able to make and take calls now.
The video below shows some of the features of the Apple Watch Series 2, with water resistance and a brighter display. The new Apple Watch Series 3, which might be announced on Tuesday, Sep. 12, could add to this with phone-like features.
