Apple's 'Elvis' Biopic Cancelled Due to Harvey Weinstein Scandal
Apple has decided to cancel its upcoming "Elvis" biopic amidst the sexual harassment scandal that Harvey Weinstein is embroiled in. Last month, The New York Times revealed "Elvis" series, a planned biopic project that would focus on the music legend Elvis Presley, initially set up at the Weinstein Company, owned by Weinstein.
Last week, however, an expose came out claiming that for the last two decades, Weinstein had been sexually harassing various women. Owing to these scandals, the executive has lost his position in The Weinstein Company, with his firing announced last Sunday. Among the major questions raised by his departure from The Weinstein Company was the future of the projects lined up under the name of the company.
Just this week, Apple has confirmed that it is pulling the plug on its Elvis Presley biopic series due to the Weinstein controversy. Apple set up the project months ago, but due to the chronicled history of Harvey's sexual harassment allegations, the company has decided not to push through with the project. Although the project has not yet been formally announced, it was initially envisioned to become part of a bigger anthology that would later feature new installments focusing on other artists, notably Prince and Michael Jackson.
According to reports, the "Elvis" biopic was still in very early stages of development, so it was easy for Apple to decide to pull the plug. Some reports also suggest that Apple is now planning to re-engage another network that originally joined the bid to make the series.
The Weinstein Company has a lot of massive projects under its belt, including "Scream" and "Project Runway." Since Weinstein is entirely out of the picture, the future of other projects that are supposed to be produced by the company is now up in the air.
