'Aquaman' Movie News: Movie Will Not Focus on the Origin of the King of the Atlantis, Says Director James Wan
Though the standalone film feature of Aquaman is slated for a 2018 release, fans of DC and the character itself are already talking just how the story in the movie will pan out. However, while it's true that many solo superhero movie features tackle the origin of the character, those looking forward to "Aquaman" can rest assured that his upcoming solo film will not fully trace how he became the King of Atlantis.
"There's Justice League that happens before it, so I have to be respectful to that, but in a lot of ways… it's a continuation but there are origin elements as well — and that's the story that I'm excited to tell," said James Wan, who has been tasked to helm the upcoming DC movie, during an interview with MTV News.
Initially, with "Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice" causing a divided opinion among the fans, those who were not satisfied with how director Zack Snyder pulled the story together of the said movie expressed worry that he might just throw his directorial influence into "Aquaman," despite Wan being its director, as he has much power over DC movies. However, Wan has maintained that the movie will take form according to his interpretation, not somebody else's, although he admits that Snyder lends his hands to him in some ways.
"Well, I think the story that I would like to tell is still at the end of the day my story. And that's what's cool with Zack, is that he's actually very respectful of that…," he told Cinema Blend last month.
Wan said that he feels excited doing the movie as Aquaman is perceived as a weak DC superhero character and is an underdog. For him, this perception can work as an advantage as it can be a way for him to surprise the audience and surpass their expectations.
"… I love the idea of being the underdog, coming in with a take on this underdog character and completely blow people's expectations away. Like, 'Oh, you thought he was going to be a wimpy character? No no no.' It's going to be so cool," he said.
Jason Momoa is set to reprise his Aquaman character featured via a cameo in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice." Actress Amber Heard will play Aquaman's wife and the Atlantean queen in the movie. Before heading to the big screen via a solo film feature of the DC superhero, Momoa and Heard will first appear on another DC and Warner Bros. movie, "Justice League: Part 1," which is slated for a Nov. 16, 2017 showing.
"Aquaman" hits the theaters on July 27, 2018.
