'Aquaman' News, Spoilers: Director James Wan Says Film Will Show 'Cool' Side Of Aquaman
The Aquaman stand-alone film coming in 2018 will show the "cool," "badass," sides of the iconic DC superhero, its director, "Insidious" helmer James Wan, has said.
Wan was at WonderCon in Los Angeles this weekend to promote his upcoming films "Lights Out" and "The Conjuring 2." While there, he also spoke to IGN about Aquaman's ("Game of Thrones" alum Jason Momoa) solo film, which is scheduled to be released in 2018.
According to Wan, "Aquaman" will resemble his other movies in that even if the material is dark, the film will still have an element of fun. This should come as a bit of good news to DC fans who felt that "Batman v Superman," in which Aquaman had a brief cameo, was too dark and gritty. According to the filmmaker, making sure that his projects are "still very fun" is very important to him and to the kind of films he makes.

Though many DC fans are looking forward to seeing Aquaman star in his own feature film for the first time, the character has also been much-maligned. As such, Wan's take on the character will have a great impact on public perception of the superhero.
"I think Aquaman is a character that a lot of people have made fun of over the years, and I just think it's fun to actually show a really different, cool, badass side to this character," Wan said. "But the same time, let's not forget to have fun with it."
DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns echoed Wan's Aquaman comment in a recent interview with ComicBook.com. Speaking from the "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" premiere in New York City on March 20, Johns said that Aquaman's introduction in the DC Extended Universe is "massive." He also said:
"…I love that people underestimate the character. I feel like hopefully we'll be able to share the love that we have as readers of the character because the jokes about him are fun, but he's got so much depth to him, no pun intended."
"Aquaman" hits theaters July 27, 2018.
Before then, the underwater superhero will make his cinematic debut in the tentatively-titled "Justice League: Part One," which is set to land in cinemas Nov. 17, 2017.
