'Arby's Finger,' New Sandwich to Debut After Boy Finds Digit in Food
A teenager got an unexpected treat in his sandwich some may describe as "finger lickin' good."
Ryan Hart, 14, said he went to Arby's after school with his mother on May 11 and had almost finished the sandwich he had ordered when he felt something in his mouth that was a bit unusual and spit it out.
After he took a closer look he knew exactly what it was, a human digit an inch long and quarter inch wide.
"I was like, 'That (has) to be a finger,'" Hart told the Jackson Citizen Patriot. "I was about to puke ... It was just nasty."
An employee sliced a part of her finger off on a meat slicer and apparently left the scene without informing any other workers, according to Steve Hall, the environmental health director for the Jackson County health department.
The other workers continued putting orders through before they knew what had happened.
The injured employee was treated at a hospital and Hall said the franchise has fully cooperated with health officials and was told they could remain open.
John Gray, a spokesman for Atlanta-based Arby's, released a statement Wednesday apologizing for what he described as an isolated and "unfortunate incident."
Gray explained that the company is still investigating but that he found the workers followed health and safety procedures after they became aware of the incident and cleaned and sanitized the restaurant.
Jamie Vail, the boy's mother, was less than happy with the sandwich shop after she took her son and a friend to the restaurant after school.
"Somebody loses a finger, and you keep sending food out the window? I can't believe that," said Vail.
Vail said she called 911 and had police meet her at a local hospital, where her son's blood was drawn and he was prescribed some medication.
