'Archer' Season 7 Release Date, News: 'Archer' Goes Full 'Magnum, P.I.' When Series Returns In March

Sterling Archer will be paying homage to Burt Reynolds' classic "Magnum, P.I." character Thomas Magnum when the adult animated series "Archer" returns to air its seventh season next month.

To tease the upcoming Season 7, FX released a shot-for-shot remake of the intro to the '80s crime drama series, with Archer as the mustachioed private investigator. The teaser, which was shot-for-shot accurate and featured the "Magnum, P.I." show theme, delighted many "Archer" fans.

But, as viewers know, this isn't the first time that the FX animated series has featured a "Magnum, P.I." reference. In Season 2, Archer dealt with a drug lord in a scene that closely resembled one in the controversial  "Magnum, P.I." episode "Did You See The Sun Rise?"

However, as it turns out, the teaser is more than just a tribute to Selleck and his classic show. As "Archer" executive producer Matt Thompson told Uproxx, it's a "subtle indicator of the story to come."

"He may not talk about it as much as Burt Reynolds or others, but Archer always had a love of all things Magnum," the "Archer" boss said.

"We were talking about how we wanted to introduce that fact," he explained, adding: "We've got a big change ahead of us, so the easiest way to do that, or the one that made the most sense to us, was to show Archer farting around, being Magnum P.I., and we just had a lot of fun with it."

But don't expect Archer and the gang to up and move to Hawaii anytime soon. Rather, the team is heading to Los Angeles, where they will be setting up the Figgis Detective Agency.

The guest stars for Season 7 include Keegan Michael Key, J.K. Simmons, Patton Oswalt, Jon Glaser, and Jon Daly.

"Archer" premieres its seventh season on March 31 on FX.
