'Archer' Season 9 News: Producers Reveal More Details on 'Danger Island' Storyline; Confirms Protagonist Is Still in Coma

More details on the story and characters to be included in the upcoming ninth season of the adult comedy animated series "Archer" were revealed during the New York Comic Con held last weekend.

"Archer," which is well-known for its spy theme, features the titular protagonist known as Agent Sterling Archer (voiced by H. Jon Benjamin). The show's ninth season will be officially called "Danger Island."

Over the previous seasons, fans probably noticed how the series' creators used earlier references of the show as focal points of the storyline but certainly with a twist. The same approach can be expected in season 9.

Executive producer Matt Thompson confirmed (via Den of Geek) that the story of "Danger Island" will still be part of an alternate reality made up in Archer's mind while being in coma. This means that Archer is still unconscious in season 9 -- but until when, no one knows yet.

So, in Archer's own version of unconscious reality, he will be reunited with his friends from the spy organization called the International Secret Intelligence Service (ISIS) which was originally headed by his alcoholic mother, Malory Archer (Jessica Walter). ISIS was shut down by the CIA in season 6.

The events in the parallel reality will be set in the 1940s, according to Entertainment Weekly. Archer, Malory, and Pam (Amber Nash) are managing a resort and hotel business together on an island -- which explains season 9's title.

Lana (Aisha Tyler), on the other hand, will be presented as an "exotic princess" looking to purchase a portion of the island with "a new version" of Cyril (Chris Parnell).

Another character who is confirmed to show up in season 9 is Cheryl (Judy Greer), who will play the role of a heiress visiting the island for her and her new husband's honeymoon. However, her new spouse will leave her stranded after she gets caught in bed with Archer.

On the other hand, Thompson and the show's co-creator Adam Reed want to reassure fans that they would tackle Archer's medical condition at some point. Thompson told the audience at Comic-Con: "We're going back to all that. We're gonna' get to everything... hopefully."

Meanwhile, co-executive producer Casey Willis also told fans that the characters who show up in the alternate reality triggered by Archer's subconscious while he is in coma represent "the people that he cares about."

"Archer Danger Island" is expected to premiere in 2018.
